How Often Should You Pump Your Septic Tank?

How often to pump a septic tank

A practical guide for Gippsland homeowners on septic tank maintenance schedules.

The short answer: every 3 to 5 years

EPA Victoria and most Gippsland councils recommend pumping your septic tank every 3 to 5 years for a standard 3–4 bedroom household. But the actual frequency depends on several factors specific to your property.

What affects how often you need to pump

  • Household size. More people means more wastewater. A couple living in a 4-bedroom house can go 5 years easily. A family of 6 in the same house may need to pump every 2–3 years.
  • Tank size. Older homes often have undersized tanks — sometimes as small as 2,000 litres. These fill faster than modern 4,500-litre tanks.
  • Water usage habits. Long showers, multiple loads of laundry per day, and running the dishwasher frequently all increase the load on your system.
  • Garbage disposal units. If you have an InSinkErator or similar unit, the extra solid waste it sends to the tank increases sludge buildup significantly. You may need to pump 50% more often.
  • What goes down the drain. Cooking oils, grease, wet wipes (even "flushable" ones), sanitary products, and harsh chemicals all reduce the efficiency of bacterial breakdown in the tank.

What happens if you don't pump on time

When sludge levels get too high, solids start flowing out of the tank and into your drain field. This clogs the absorption trenches — which are extremely expensive to repair or replace. In the worst case, raw sewage backs up into the house or surfaces on your property.

The cost of a pump out ($350–$700) is a fraction of what drain field replacement costs ($5,000–$15,000+). Regular maintenance is genuinely the cheapest option.

How to check if your tank needs pumping

Without opening the tank, watch for these signs:

  • Drains are slower than usual throughout the house
  • Gurgling sounds when you flush or run water
  • Unpleasant odour near the tank or drain field
  • Unusually green or soggy grass above the drain field
  • Any sewage visible on the ground surface

If you're not sure when your tank was last pumped, it's worth getting it checked. We can inspect sludge levels and advise whether it's time.

Setting up a maintenance schedule

The easiest approach is to set a reminder for every 3 years and adjust based on what the technician finds at each pump out. If sludge levels are low, you can stretch to 4–5 years. If they're high, come back sooner.

We can set you up on a regular maintenance schedule so you never have to think about it.
